Less than an hour later, he was in his car headed north on I-95. Gray hoped and prayed the GPS signal would pick up again. Fortunately the battery in the tracker had a long life. However, it wasn’t waterproof. If Peyton’s backpack was submerged...

Couldn’t think like that. He had to focus on the best possible outcome. Peyton wasn’t Andrea, his ex-fiancée. He would not be too late to save her.

Detective Sims and four patrol units followed him on the interstate. Suddenly the tracker began to ping a signal.

Gray followed.

He drove off an exit ramp along local roadways until reaching US Highway 1, then turned north.

The entrance to the state park was closed, but he called the emergency number on the gate. When a ranger pulled up to the gate, Gray explained what he needed. The ranger had not seen a late-model red truck that day. There were security cameras at the station, though.

It would take too long to go through the footage.

“I need a map of the park, including any camping spots, including primitive camping, and cabins.”

The ranger handed him a map. “These are all the places for rent.”

He shook his head. “What about ranger cabins?”

The man frowned. “Those aren’t for rent.”

Even better. “Any not occupied recently? I’m talking about an area where few people would hike.”

Instinct told him her abductor wanted privacy. He didn’t want to entertain the reason why Peyton’s kidnapper desired privacy.

“There’s a primitive cabin deep in the northern section, but it’s only used by rangers and environmentalists studying the wildlife in the area. It’s dark and has no exterior lighting.”

A perfect place to bring a kidnap victim. “Give me the latitude and longitude.”

He jotted it down on the map, and the combination the ranger gave him to unlock the gate prohibiting entry onto the cabin road. Gray drove off, letting the uniforms and Sims deal with the park ranger and the security tapes as he followed the tracking signal.

Halfway through the massive acreage, the signal faltered. Cursing, he pulled over, thought fast. It might be interference from the satellite signal.

His thoughts immediately went dark. What if Peyton was dead? Her backpack tossed aside and her abductor had already left with her?

Stop it. She’s alive. She has to be. You promised to be her shadow.

Putting his car into gear again, he drove forward,

The signal pinged again, this time much weaker.

Gray pulled off the road, used his phone and a map app to plug in the latitude and longitude of the research cabin. Sure enough, the signal came from the direction of the cabin. He turned off onto a dirt road, came to a gate barring entrance.

Examining the locked gate, he snapped on latex gloves and used the combination the ranger had given him. Gray called Sims and explained his location.

The police would dust for prints on the gate, but he doubted they would find any.

About a mile north of the main road, his headlights picked out the one-story cabin. Hewn from rough wood, with a small space allotted for parking, it was far from any public hiking trails or utility access.
